Victoria Chen Taiji Academy has been teaching in Victoria since 1996. We teach Chen style taiji, Yang taiji and Qi Gong.

Head Instructor, Gordon Muir, began his studies with Yang Taiji in 1981 with the famous Yang master T. T. Liang. He pursued Yang style with Master Liang for over fourteen years and continues to study and teach to this day. In the early 1990s Gordon was introduced to Chen Style Taiji after moving to the West Coast of Canada. He first studied with Master Zhang Xue-Xin and later met his current teacher, Master Chen Zhonghua. Gordon was with Chen Zhonghua in 2004 when he was given the status of International Standard Bearer for Chen Style Practical Method.

Our current class location is at Burnside/Gorge Community Centre located at the intersection of Jutland and Cecillia.

In Chen style we teach the following:

Foundation Exercises - also called circles or jibengong.

  • Yi Lu - this is the first form learned in Chen taiji. We teach the first section of this form along with advanced silk reeling every Monday and Wednesday in the second class, from 7:30 - 8:30 PM.
  • Er Lu or Cannon Fist - this is the second form learned in Chen Taiji. Usually not taught until the student has several years of practise with Yi Lu.
  • Push hands - we have two classes per week for push hands. Tuesday evenings and Sunday afternoons. There is a prerequisite of satisfactory performance in the beginning classes before students are allowed into this class.
  • Chen Broadsword - this is the first weapons set taught. It is an energetic and fun set to learn. Several levels of learning this set include choreography, details and usage.
  • Chen straight sword - taught on Tuesday evenings. Also has a prerequisite.

Gordon Muir also studied Yang style tai chi with Yang style Master, T. T. Liang. Gordon was a student of Liangs for more than 14 years and learned the complete Yang curriculum.

At our school we teach the full Yang style tai chi curriculum including long form, two person applications, push hands, weapons and weapon fencing sets.

We teach a Yang style beginners class on Tuesday and Friday evenings at 5:30 PM. During these classes we often practise push hands or posture applications.

Head Instructor Gordon Muir studied Yang style with Master Liang for over fourteen years and spent another seven years teaching and researching the art.
